Jeanette M Pitts_ MD.jpg

Jeanette Pitts, MD

Mission

Dr. Pitts is a board certified dermatologist who also has the distinction of being among the first to be board certified in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS) after the inaugural administration of this exam. Her higher education began at Stanford University where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a junior and graduated with honors and distinction with a B.S. in Biological Sciences. Awarded a Rhodes scholarship, she subsequently studied physiology at Oxford University in England. She completed her medical degree at her home state institution, University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she was elected to the honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Pitts then completed a dermatology residency at Emory University and a Mohs surgery fellowship at Penn State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Pitts’ 20+ year dermatologic surgery career has spanned academic and private sector
settings in multiple states. At Mayo Clinic Arizona she served as head of Dermatologic Surgery and Aesthetics. She later started a Mohs surgery service at the University of Arizona—Arizona Cancer Center and at Gundersen Health System, a large multi-specialty clinic serving the tristate area of western Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa, she started a second distinct Mohs surgery practice. Most recently she practiced in Texas with a private group focused on the surgical treatment of skin cancer. These institutions afforded her the opportunity for collaboration with other surgical specialists in patient care. To the benefit of her patients, she has maintained these inter-specialty relationships throughout her professional endeavors. Most important to her, though, is communicating and collaborating with patients
and their families in delivering optimal health care.

Outside of direct patient care, Dr. Pitts has been involved with education, formally with resident teaching and continues to informally mentor medical students and dermatology residents with aspirations in dermatologic surgery. She had the honor of being featured along with other historical and contemporary Black female physicians in the inspirational book Against All Odds: Celebrating Black Women in Medicine. She has served as an officer on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery Society and as Dermatology Section Chair of the National Medical Association where she was responsible for programming an annual continuing medical education conference for dermatologists. She has been active on committees of other national associations including the American College of Mohs Surgery, American Academy of Dermatology and Women’s Dermatologic Society.

Fun Facts: Dr. Pitts enjoys traveling and researching family genealogy and military history in her leisure time. As a native of Kansas City, she is thrilled to return to her hometown and be a part of the KMC family.
