Pharyngeal pH study is a minimally invasive in-office procedure to test the levels of pH in the upper esophagus. The purpose of this exam is to determine if gastroesophageal reflux disease is the cause of a patient's symptoms.
A small catheter is passed through the nasal passage into the oropharynx. It is secured in place with a Tegaderm dressing and connected to a small data recorder, which records the pH data over a 24-hour period. Once the patient returns, the catheter is removed and the pH information is downloaded with special software to a computer. This information is then graphed and calculated. Reports are often available within a few days.
Preparation includes discontinuing proton pump inhibitors for 7-10 days. The patient should arrive for testing while fasting the morning of the procedure.
