The Lactulose Breath test is a non-invasive procedure which enables physicians to test for the presence of bacteria in the Small Intestine. This is commonly called Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). This test is performed at Kansas Medical Clinic by trained personnel.

This procedure is indicated for patients who have a history of Irritable Bowel Syndrome or ongoing symptoms that may include but are not limited to bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation.

A safe, non-absorbable sugar solution is swallowed by the patient. Hydrogen and methane gases are measured in the patient’s breath. Gas levels are elevated as the solution is passed thru the small intestine and the bacteria feast on the sugar.

This test is performed in a comfortable setting with portable DVD players and reading materials available. The testing time is approximately three hours. The preparations include only minimal dietary changes.
